Stories of The Kruger | RETURNAfrica’s Pafuri Camp in Northern Kruger
The northern section of the Kruger National Park, from Punda Maria upwards, is my favourite area of the Kruger to visit. The fact that there are very few visitors that travel north is a huge advantage, but the beauty in the north of the Park is unmatchable.
Tucked away, very close to the infamous Crooks Corner, lies one of the most picturesque private camps in the Kruger… RETURNAfrica’s Pafuri Camp.
General Information on Pafuri Camp
Within the northern section of the Kruger Park, you will find Pafuri Camp. It is in the private 26,500-hectare Makuleke Concession. This area is the ancestral home of the Makuleke people, and is one of the most diverse parts of the Kruger. It is located on the banks of the Luvuvhu River and has 19 luxurious designer tents with en-suit bathrooms and 7 family tents that sleep up to 4 people.
The views from each of these tents is spectacular, all overlooking the perennial Luvuvhu river. Guests can spend the heat of the day watching a variety of animals meandering along the river.

Activities at Pafuri Camp
You do not have to leave the camp to enjoy your stay here. There is a 1.6 kilometre raised wooden walkway that runs from one side of the camp to the other. You can view all sorts of wildlife and feel alone in the African bush. Nyala and bushbuck can often be spotted browsing throughout the camp surrounds, not at all perturbed that you are close by.
During the heat of the day, feel free to relax at the beautiful swimming pool and lounging area, amazing bar or dining area all under giant Nyala and Jackalberry trees.
A stay at Pafuri Camp includes three meals and an early morning and late afternoon game drive. The drives are not just to look for wildlife, you get to learn a lot about the history, archaeology and biodiversity of the northern area as well.
We definitely recommend going on at least one bush walk; these are unforgettable experiences. Remember to book a walk in advance.

Animal Experiences at Pafuri Camp
Early morning wake ups are essential. Not only can you watch the sun rise, but you can hear the different noises from animals. Hear the transition from the night to the early morning sounds.
In the winter month’s huge herds of animals, especially buffalo and elephants, converge towards the Luvuvhu River to drink. Elephants are plentiful as well as antelope and you might be lucky enough to see one of the many Leopards in the area.
You never know what to expect on game drives either, so keep your eyes peeled.
There are many animal species in and around the camp to be seen and enjoyed.
Pel’s Fishing Owl
Birding at Pafuri Camp
Birding is a particular obsession of mine, and if you enjoy birding, look no further than Pafuri Camp. With over 450 species in this area, you will not be disappointed. The Pel’s Fishing Owl, which I regard as a “lifer” (A sought after bird that you might only see once in your life), can often be seen from Pafuri’s bar and there is a huge chance of seeing other rarities such as the Narina Trogon, Böhm’s Spinetail and the Racket-tailed Roller. Specific birding walks can be arranged with the friendly and helpful Pafuri Camp staff.
This camp will not disappoint, and after you leave you will be longing to go back, it is a magical place!
